Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible’s co-executive directors Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin issued the following statement:
“Breonna Taylor was murdered while sleeping in her home. She should be alive today, and her killers should have been fired and prosecuted for her murder. Light, tangential charges for one officer in the case are a mockery of justice. Today’s news is infuriating, heartbreaking, and another devastating reminder of how very very far we are from justice or safety for Black people in this country.
“We want to express our solidarity with all those taking to the streets in Louisville and beyond to demand justice. This decision shows us more than ever: we must demand transformative change. Despite increased scrutiny, police continue to harass, violate and murder Black people. This ongoing violence by law enforcement is systemic. We are beyond the point of police reform. It is simply not enough to discuss a need for bias training or an increase in body cameras. We must defund the police and reinvest in community services that keep everyone safe.
“We do not accept an America where Black people can be murdered with impunity. We will continue to fight to demand justice, to defund police departments, to get engaged and stay engaged in the lifetime work of fighting white supremacy where it shows up in our institutions and in our own lives.
“We continue to hold Breonna Taylor, her friends, family, and community in our hearts. Our hearts continue to break for the many years of life that she had ahead of her. We will continue to say her name.”
Sharon Fleck, board co-chair of Indivisible Kentucky, issued the following statement:
“IndivisibleKY continues to stand in solidarity with the groups on the ground protesting and grieving the loss of Breonna Taylor at the hands of LMPD. The delay of delivering justice by Daniel Cameron looks like a political ploy with strings straight to Mitch.
“Elected leaders have let their constituents down by trying to hide the truth and submitting blank reports in this case. There is no other profession where one could circumvent the process and still hold their job.”
