Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s state policy manager Lauren Boc released the following statement in response to the newly released New York budget:
“We are disappointed that the New York state legislature decided to ignore the needs of the people and left out key Fair Elections details from the budget, punting the issue to a commission without binding requirements to ensure a robust program. The Assembly supported small donor matching several times in the past when it was purely a political tool, but lacked the courage to follow through when change was truly possible. The grassroots who fought for New York’s new blue trifecta have made it clear at every step of the budget process that small donor public financing was a priority. But our elected representatives failed to listen and proved that special interests still have too much influence in Albany.”
“It is possible that the commission could still create the active 6-to-1 small donor matching system New York needs, but it is not the concrete solution to our election problems that we called for. The success of the commission now depends on who is appointed. We'll be watching closely. We are grateful to our champion legislators and the New York Senate for their work, and we are proud of Indivisibles across the state who relentlessly pushed their representatives to finally improve our electoral system. We know they are not satisfied and will continue this fight.”
