Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible’s National Policy Director Mary Small released the following statement:
“All the progress we made so far cannot be easily swept aside by a fossil fuel company wish list. Manchin’s dirty deal would have devastating impacts on the environment and frontline communities, undercut the important pro-climate wins that Democrats secured this year, so was opposed by a huge swath of the Democratic coalition–from Members of Congress to frontline communities, environmental organizations, and many others.
“Additionally, the dangerous policies pushed by Manchin and the pro-oil and gas industries would only tarnish Democrats’ climate legacy. As Congressman Grijalva said, this would create an “ugly asterisks” on the historic climate investments in the Inflation Reduction Act.
“In keeping with their work so far this Congress, the Congressional Progressive Caucus understood how to protect the priorities of the Biden administration and organized against the deal early on. It’s because of these progressive champions that Democrats can proudly claim the mantle of climate champions. As we move into a new Congress, it is important to implement the lessons learned from this past year. The fight over the dirty deal showcases one critical learning: When Democrats go against their values (in this case supporting fossil fuel executives) they will be out-organized by Members grounded in winning the policy priorities voters were promised.”
