Washington, DC — Today, Leah Greenberg, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of Indivisible, issued the following statement after House Republicans elected Rep. Mike Johnson as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives:
“For 22 days, Congress has been in a state of chaos as our country hurtles towards a government shutdown that will harm millions of Americans. Republicans cycled through a roster of incompetent, unqualified candidates for Speaker during that time, but today they settled any debate about their priorities by electing Mike Johnson and doubling down on his extremist policies.
“The election of Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House is the clearest signal House Republicans could send that they are going to pursue a national abortion ban. Johnson has been one of the most aggressive anti-choice politicians in their conference, and has pushed for nationwide, no-exceptions restrictions on abortion throughout his career. His leading role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election also underscores the ongoing threat to democracy posed by MAGA Republicans in the 2024 election.
“Johnson’s election will reinvigorate Republican efforts to cut Social Security, Medicare, and other essential programs for working Americans. Indivisibles across the country will be standing up to hold their Republican Representatives accountable for the chaos in Congress and the extreme, out-of-touch policies that Johnson’s MAGA majority will be pushing as they drive us towards a shutdown.”
