Washington, D.C. — Today, In response to news that the Biden administration is planning to extend deportation protections and work authorization to the undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens, Mari Urbina, Managing Director of Indivisible and former senior aide to Senator Harry Reid, released the following statement:
“What the Biden administration is doing may well turn out to be the biggest news for commonsense immigration policy since the DACA program in 2012 helped childhood arrivals stay. This will grant safety and peace of mind to hundreds of thousands of mixed-status American families across the country, just by putting into policy something most Americans have assumed was already on the books: protections for the spouses of U.S. citizens.
“The fear of a loved one’s deportation has haunted too many families every day across the U.S. Too many kids have been scared for too long that a parent might not be there one day when they come home. President Biden is changing that scary reality for hundreds of thousands of families.
“President Biden’s choice today is smart politics and the right moral choice. Democrats win when they’re the party of solutions and compassion, the party grounded in families and stabilizing communities. Trump and the Republicans have fully embraced being the extremist party that terrorizes families, fighting to hold onto power no matter the cost. During the Trump years, people of all backgrounds rose up in outrage against Trump’s policies of caging children and separating families. The more President Biden's essential decency can stand in contrast to Trump's cruelty and chaos through decisive actions like this, the more he’ll be able to energize an enthusiastic base to fight for his re-election.”
