Once again, Republican chaos has forced Congress to kick the can down the road on government funding. Another government funding deadline is rapidly approaching and, once again, Republicans are in chaos.
Instead of passing government funding bills by the deadline that they set, Republicans have forced Congress to pass another continuing resolution. But the GOP chaos doesn’t stop there. They are still using All so they can continue to use the threat of a government shutdown to extract hundreds of bad, non-starter policy riders as a part of the funding bills. They’re called “riders” because they “ride along” on a bigger piece of legislation, but make no mistake these are serious threats. These poison-pill riders include attacks on abortion and reproductive freedom, the LGBTQ+ community, and vulnerable asylum seekers and immigrants.
However, the Republican caucus is in such disarray that passing any bill to fund the government will need significant Democratic support. There might even be more Democrats voting for it than Republicans, despite the GOP House majority. Democrats should not offer their votes for any appropriations bills that include extreme GOP demands.
It’s not up to Democrats to save Republicans from their own chaos. They cannot give into baseless Republican threats and allow any of these extreme, unpopular riders to pass. Once a rider passes, it becomes entrenched as a legacy rider and is almost impossible to remove from future appropriation bills.

Don’t let Republicans attach bad policy riders to government funding bills.
Hello, I’m a constituent from [part of state] and I’m calling to ask [Representative] to oppose all of the GOP’s extreme policy riders in the government funding bills.
We are still at risk of a disastrous r government shutdown and Republicans in Congress are busy trying to further their far-right agenda through poison-pill policy riders instead of actually working to fund the government. They’re demanding a laundry list of extreme and unpopular riders, including defunding Planned Parenthood and rolling back necessary gun violence protections.
Given that Speaker Johnson will need significant Democratic support to pass any government funding bills, I encourage Democrats to continue to fight back against these extreme policy riders. It’s critical that no new riders are passed, or they will become entrenched in all future funding bills.
