Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ-05), a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, drawing attention to his recent power play which gave Trump and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) funding to expand their detention camps and ramp up their deportation activities.
Eight organizations from the immigrant justice and progressive movements announced its Free To Move, Free To Stay: A New Framework on Immigration for Progressives, setting a new standard for Democratic presidential candidates on immigration if they hope to appeal to immigrant, Latinx, and voters of color before the primary season officially begins.
Today, the Dream and Promise Act passed the House of Representatives as H.R. 6, a clear indication of its level of priority within the Democratic Party. It’s about time. We congratulate the immigrant youth, activists, advocates, and congressional champions who made this bill possible and who fought to keep it strong.
Detention Watch Network, Indivisible Project and Faith in Action’s immigrants’ rights program, LA RED are demanding an immediate investigation and public release of the findings related to the death of Simratpal Singh. Singh, 21, died on May 3 while in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after being detained at the La Paz County Jail. This is the second death to occur in ICE custody in the state of Arizona within the last month and the sixth death to occur in ICE detention in Fiscal Year 2019.
If Congress approves this supplemental funding request, it will be handing Trump more money to cage children, commit abuses against families, and systematically deny asylum seekers their legal rights. Instead of addressing the drivers of migration, like violence and corruption in sending countries, this request will only continue to fund the failed deterrence-based policies that the Trump administration has rabidly pursued.
Congress is already working on next year’s funding levels, including for ICE and CBP. Now’s the time to weigh in to make sure they’re working to #DefundHate.
On a bipartisan basis, the Senate has joined the House in voting to terminate Trump’s fraudulent “national emergency.” Never before has Congress overturned a national emergency declaration — but, then again, never before has a president used a fake emergency to subvert the will of the people and Congress and fund something they specifically rejected. This was an illegal power grab rooted in hate that erodes our democratic norms and slides us further into autocracy.
Our hearts are breaking for our Muslim friends and neighbors, and our global community. We see you, we love you and we stand shoulder to shoulder with you in the fight for a future without fear. We absolutely must recognize that the motivation for this horror was rooted in Islamophobia and white nationalism, poisons that are actively being spread by elected officials, pundits, and a rising white nationalist movement here in our own country and around the world.
The Dream and Promise Act would provide permanent relief and a path to citizenship for the millions of immigrants Trump has targeted. It is an important step toward securing justice for all of the immigrant families who live and work in our communities. We recognize that the road ahead is long, but we won’t rest until we have secured permanent protections for all immigrant families, starting with passage of this bill in the House.
Family separations don’t just happen at the border. The Trump Administration is separating families through a concerted effort to deport immigrants, or prevent them from entering the U.S. at all. Here are some things you can do to support immigrant families.
